The ivy-covered Harvard University campus has been jolted in past months by a newcomer to the school. From spontaneously joining football practices to causing quarrels with such black advocates as Al Sharpton, new President Lawrence Summers sure knows how to shake things up.
Since joining the Harvard community in July, Summers has aroused controversy surrounding the banished ROTC program, hopes of hiring younger professors and the Hispanic Studies program. Most recently, he found himself in a position of having to retract criticisms made toward African-American Studies professor Cornel West. Accused of discrimination and an abrasive attitude, Summers must learn to control himself.
The president’s gung-ho approach to connect with the students shows his good intentions. It is clear he is trying very hard to step in and make a statement — almost too hard. Summers could stand to employ a little moderation in handling the campus. Harvard is in need of a fresh voice, someone who will give everything to improve the university’s community by facing issues such as the recent grade inflation accusations. Judging by Summers’ enthusiasm about his new position, he has the ability to succeed in bringing about these improvements. But before he can make any headway, he needs to step back and re-evaluate his statements and actions.
President of one of the top universities in the country is not a position to be taken lightly. However, acting in an over-aggressive manner is not a wise road to take. If Summers shifts his effort from trying to leave a lasting impression on his colleagues and students to the platform of improving the university, his impact will be deeper than anyone could expect.
