STAFF EDIT: Inspire Student Interest

The Boston University Student Union recently received a budget increase of $1 per student, and President Zachary Coseglia is appreciative, yet unsatisfied with the new funds. Coseglia says more work could be accomplished, such as the creation of new activities, if the budget was expanded even more. While it is important the Union is considering doing more for its students, in most cases, size does not matter.

The Union put together a presentation of “Shrek” on the BU Beach this fall. It received a great response, as hundreds of students brought out their blankets, sweatshirts and snacks to enjoy themselves under the stars. This is the kind of work the Union must continue to keep its student body interested.

The important concept to remember is students want to see results. It is vital the Union continues its work toward improving the Guest Policy and minority relations, but in the meantime, students need their representatives to do something they can actually see.

If the Union thinks a larger budget is required to produce this tangible evidence of its accomplishments, it is sorely mistaken. Hold another movie night. Hire a small, yet well-known band and put together a concert. Students will not object to paying a small fee to see a performance, and the profits will help to eliminate the strain of saving money. The more events the Union provides, no matter how small, the more students will rally behind its causes.

Right now, the Student Union must focus on becoming more visible and attracting its students’ involvement. Students will be ready and willing to participate in events provided by their Student Union, and as they begin to know their leaders, they will become more opinionated in its causes.
