STAFF EDIT: Service Follow-Through

In an attempt to attract students to community service opportunities, the Boston University Community Service Center held a service fair last week, which more than 220 students attended. It is encouraging to see so many students interested in community service, so long as they follow through on their commitments.

College students are busy people with classes, homework and, for some, extracurricular activities and jobs. It is definitely hard to schedule time to donate toward helping the Boston community. The idea to put in service time is appealing and well-meaning, but it ends up being a lot easier said than done. However, if students do decide to get involved in helping others, it would be nice to see this decision acted upon.

Just showing interest in community service is not enough. Follow through is necessary to actually succeed in helping those less fortunate. Besides, community service is a great opportunity for college students to feel good about themselves and their actions, as well as to give Boston a strong impression of BU students.

To the city of Boston, college students are not always regarded highly. If the number of students participating in community service increases, the potential for bridging the gap between college students and the Boston community will grow. It is important for Boston residents to see college students do more than party, make noise and trash the streets. Students’ credibility would expand considerably.

Community service is vital; Make the extra effort to follow through on these initial commitments. The Boston community and students will be better for it.
