1809: Charles Robert Darwin was born. Darwin was renowned for his documentation of evolution and for his theory of its operation, known commonly today as Darwinism. His evolutionary theory was laid out chiefly in a “single grand argument,” “On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection,” published in 1859. Happy birthday, Mr. Darwin.
1889: Thomas Edison issued U.S. patents for “Method of Winding Field Magnets” and a “Phonograph.” (Edison was born on February 11, 1847.)
1895: Thomas Edison issued U.S. patents for “Filament for Incandescent Lamps” and a “Incandescent Electric Lamp.”
1957: General Electric Company announces the creation of the only substance harder than diamond. Borazon, cubic boron nitride, scratches diamonds and remains hard at temperatures at which diamond burns. It is now common in industrial applications.
1998: Intel unveils the first graphics chip, the i740.
