Student Alumni Council

This letter is NOT for publication. It is meant to be read by the News and Editorial Staff of The Daily Free Press ONLY.

I am not writing an editorial for print in The Daily Free Press because I do not wish to be read by the Boston University Community. My intnetion is to make a personal point to the senior staff of The Daily Free Press.

This past Saturday, February 9, the Boston University Student Alumni Council hosted a large scale event – A Winter Fashion Show, Prelude to the Back Bay Ball – for the entire Boston University Community, which included students, parents, and alumni. This event celebrated the success of a Boston University Alum, Jessica McClintock. An award winning designer – who has brought great credit to her alma mater. The event gave visibility to the success of an alum and acknowledged the fact that Boston University students have role models who have done very well after graduation. Close to 600 guests attended the event (it was standing room only). There was a pre-reception, terrific fashion show, door prizes and a performance by The Dear Abbeys. The event was free.

For some odd reason The Daily Free Press did not cover the story at all. The entire senior staff of The Daily Free Press was sent an invite and press release. The Student Alumni Council has been creating events like this for over six years now. At a time when students are writing editorials about how the Student Union is not providing the type of programming needed at Boston University, and that the administration is not supporting the type of programming that the students want at Boston University, I find it ironic that the SAC hosted just such an event , and The Daily Free Press chose not to report on it. I am hopeful that The Daily Free Press gives more coverage to the SAC’s involvement with the BUnited SpringFest Concert than it did to the Fashion Show. The SAC has been involved with the planning and organizing of that proposal from the beginning. The PC and the SAC have been working together on the BUnited SpringFest proposal since November 2001.

The SAC is about hosting events and programs for the Boston University Student Community that create a connection between, students, alumni and Boston University. The Winter Fashion Show did that, The BUnited SpringFest will do that.

Sincerely,

Keith D. Tavares, CGS’88, CAS’90 BUA Vice President Student and Young Alumni Programs
