After numerous positive phone calls from students and parents regarding the Thanksgiving buses, the Student Union has decided to charter buses to New York’s Pennsylvania Station for Spring Break, according to Union President Zachary Coseglia.
The buses will leave the George Sherman Union at 6 p.m. on Friday, March 1 and will return on Sunday, March 10, leaving Penn. Station at noon.
According to Coseglia, a senior in the College of Communication, the buses are being coordinated by the Student Union in conjunction with the Dean of Students Office and Student Activities Office.
Unlike its preparations for Thanksgiving weekend, the Union has not predetermined how many tickets will be on sale for the buses, Coseglia said. The Union will determine how many buses it will need after ticket sales are closed.
Coseglia said the decision to send buses to New York was made after the Union and the Student Activities Office received compliments about the BUnited Bus Lines, which shuttled students to New York City, Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia for the Thanksgiving break.
“We got so many phone calls and emails from people who thought it was a great idea, so it’s kind of back by popular demand,” Coseglia said. “We thought, ‘Hey, here’s another opportunity for the Union to provide something useful for the students and give them a safe, comfortable, cheap alternative to flying or taking the train.'”
Laurie Steinberg, Union vice president of public relations, said the Union isn’t sending buses to Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia during this recess due to a lack of interest over Thanksgiving.
“The New York City bus was by far the most popular, so we decided to just go with that for Spring Break,” Steinberg said. “The New York City buses had a bigger turnout.”
Tickets for the buses will be $40 round-trip, Coseglia said. Tickets are scheduled to go on sale in the SAO Business Office on the fourth floor of the George Sherman Union tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Feb. 28.
