BUPD LOG: Backpack Thief Leads BUPD On Chase

The following were taken from last week’s Boston University Police Department logs.

A 22-year-old man was arrested after stealing property from BU’s Case Athletic Center on Feb. 20 at 5:15 p.m.

BU students allegedly observed a Cambridge man stealing backpacks at 285 Commonwealth Ave, and reported the incident to police. BUPD officers then stopped the suspect to question him on Alcorn Street, police said.

When the suspect was approached, he ran from the officers and into the Star Market parking lot, located at the intersection of Alcorn and Ashford streets. According to police, Brookline Police officers joined BUPD in the chase.

The officers chased the suspect through Star Market, entering from the rear and exiting the front of the store, police said. They reportedly followed him across the street and found his jacket behind 1080 Commonwealth Ave. According to police, they pursued the suspect to Brookline.

Brookline Police reportedly later found the man on his back, hiding under a fence on Windslow Road. the suspect was arrested for trespassing and felony charges of theft and receiving stolen property, BUPD said.

This case is still under investigation, police said. According to police, the suspect was scheduled to appear at Brighton District Court on Feb. 21.

TRESSPASSING

A 43-year-old man was arrested at Mugar Memorial Library on Feb. 20 at about 1 p.m., police said.

BUPD officers responded to a call concerning a suspicious person. According to police, they arrived and questioned the man before determining he had no purpose for being in the library. They also learned the suspect had been given a warning to stay off the property a few months earlier, and he was arrested for trespassing.

PARTY VANDALISM

Three non-BU students caused a disturbance at a party on Feb. 23 at 1 a.m. at 194 Bay State Rd., according to police.

BUPD officers responded to a complaint of uninvited guests and stopped the suspects in front of BU’s School of Management, police said. The suspects were a 23- and a 24-year-old from Medford and a 23-year-old from Belmont.

According to police, the three suspects entered the party and were asked to leave. They then tore a thermostat off the wall, according to police reports. They also removed a fire extinguisher from the wall and threw it at a window, but no damage was done.

The suspects said the damage was an accident and admitted to drinking that night, police said. The case is still under investigation.
