How Dare Silber Humiliate Us?

A University Chancellor is supposed to protect his students. He is supposed to respect their integrity and their intelligence, look out for their interests and uphold their dignity in the eyes of the community. With his letter to The Daily Free Press on Monday, John Silber has betrayed the students of this University by portraying us in print as immoral and idiotic sex fiends. With his mocking words and his accusations, Silber humiliated the University by proving conclusively that he has no respect for the student body.

How dare he accuse us of wanting to change the Guest Policy because we want fun and games with sexual partners? How dare he suggest that those opposed to the Policy are only angry because they have to move their trysts into hotel rooms? I am absolutely appalled that John Silber thinks so poorly of BU students that he would make these ridiculous suggestions. Never mind the fact that his letter gave everyone a good chuckle. What’s funny to us is humiliating when it reaches the eyes of outsiders. We deserve better. As smart and responsible men and women, we deserve a chancellor who respects us. We deserve someone who is willing to engage in dialogue with student leaders to find a balance between safety and freedom, not someone who shuts down and insults his students before listening. With this letter, John Silber showed he is utterly out of touch with students, he does not respect us and he is no longer the right chancellor for BU.
