Field hockey starts season with two victories

Junior forward Lindsey Domers scored the first goal of the season 10 minutes into the second half propelling the Boston University field hockey team to a 2-1 opening day win over the University of Massachusetts at Amherst on Saturday.

In what was the first game of the season for both teams, UMass (0-1) got on the board first on a penalty corner from freshman Jamie Bawden at 27:17 of the first half.

Sarah Bohonowicz assisted on the tally.

BU battled back to tie the game with 12 seconds remaining in the first half when junior midfielder Celeste Hubbard scored on a corner with an assist from sophomore back Lauren Vendetti.

The game-winning goal for BU came when sophomore back Adrienne Scibilia fed Domers at 20:49 of the second half.

Domers beat UMass goalie Christine Tocco, giving BU a 2-1 advantage.

BU goalkeeper Susan Harrington preserved the victory for the Terriers, stopping 10 of 11 Minutemen shots on goal.

BU had five penalty corners and nine shots on goal in the contest.

Scibilia’s assist was her first collegiate point, while Domers got her first game-winning goal of the season.

She led the team last year with two game winners.

Domers also scored two goals in yesterday’s game, a 7-1 BU win over Quinnipiac University.

Junior midfielder Dalinda Bansuelos chipped in a goal and two assists to improve the Terriers’ record to 2-0.

It was a balanced attack from the BU offense, as six Terriers scored in the game.

The win was the 250th of head coach Sally Starr’s career.

Quinnipiac got on the board first just 5:29 into the game when freshman forward Danielle Avenoso beat BU goalie Susan Harrington for an early 1-0 lead.

The Terriers answered back though, as sophomore Kara Rossi scored her first goal of the season at 15:42 of the first half. BU then took the lead with 1:56 left in the half when Domers took a pass off a corner and put it past goal keeper Erin McKay to make it 2-1.

The Terriers would not relinquish the lead after that, as the Bobcats got only one second half shot on net.

Four Terriers scored for the first time in their careers Freshman forward Natalie Disabato and freshman midfielder Amy Seaman both scored as did sophomores Kara Rossi and Erin Burke-Webster.

Harrington made only one save in the first half, a testament to the BU defense.

Sophomore Jodie Gardner relieved Harrington with 8:44 left in the game.

The Terriers’ next game is on Saturday when they host the College of William and Mary.

Like all home games, it will be played at MIT’s Jack Barry Field. BU heads on the road after that, playing at Boston College and then in the Terrapin Classic hosted by the University of Maryland.
