Holocaust can’t justify occupation

Dr. Elie Wiesel, a Boston University professor, is an internationally recognized authority on the Holocaust, a worthwhile devotion that is just and needed. As a prominent figure in this history, however, it would seem that he could also be in the forefront for the effort of peace in the Middle East.

The Holocaust cannot be an excuse for occupation of the West Bank and Gaza or Israel’s persecution of Palestinians. Neither can it be the reason for a Zionist Israel. The land remaining certainly belongs to the Palestinians whose people have been there long before the Jewish people. The biblical promise that God gave the land to the Israelites was broken some 1,800 years ago after the Jews broke their side of the promise so many, many times.

To label Palestinians “terrorists” is an effective lie, as any people under occupation will resist. The Palestinians are not any different than the “resistance fighters” who bombed the King David Hotel and a U.S. naval ship before the founding of the State of Israel. Killing 180 Palestinians cannot be justified, nor the treatment of Arab and Christian Palestinians over the wrongful killing of 800 Israelis.

It is time for all of us to work for a workable peace in Israel, the West Bank and Gaza. It is time to create a State of Palestine. Both peoples can live and work together, and a greater future is possible now. Please work for peace.
