Men’s soccer hosts Fairfield tonight

After an impressive performance in its home opener last weekend, the Boston University men’s soccer team will try to break the .500 mark when it hosts Fairfield University tonight at Nickerson Field.

The Terriers (1-1-1, 0-0-0 America East) showed a little more life offensively Friday night against the University of Massachusetts at Amherst than they did in their first two games, and will need the same kind of performance up front tonight against the Stags.

After scoring only one goal in their first two games, the Terriers scored three on Friday, with freshman Sedrick Chin contributing to all three by tallying a goal and two assists. Senior E.A. Carr added his first career goal, and the Terriers tallied their third point off the foot of junior Alan McNamara.

One advantage the Terriers have coming into tonight’s matchup is game experience. Having already played three games, including one against a top-15 team in the University of California at Los Angeles and one against a team who made the second round of the NCAA Tournament in Massachusetts, BU has started to come together as a squad.

Fairfield (0-0-0, 0-0-0 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference), on the other hand, has yet to play this season. While no one has seen them yet this season, the team was ranked second in the MAAC pre-season coaches poll.

The Stags made it to the conference championship game last year for the fifth time in six years and were ranked as high as 12th last season in a national Division I poll.

For the Terriers to be successful, they will have to keep a serious eye on sophomore sensation Danny Attwell. Attwell was the MAAC Rookie of the Year last season after tallying six goals and four assists. But just going by statistics, BU might not have to worry so much, as Attwell seemed to turn it on against conference opponents, registering only one goal and one assist in non-conference games.

One thing the Terriers are relying on is great goalkeeping now that senior Matt Smith is back between the pipes full time. After missing much of last year to injury, Smith has had a few games to get back into game shape.

This is the second of four straight home games for the Terriers, as they will play seven of their next 11 games at Nickerson Field. Among the upcoming games are a trip up Commonwealth Avenue to Boston College in two weeks, and the

America East opener at home against the State University of New York at Binghamton.

Chin Honored

After his four-point performance Friday night against Massachusetts, Sedrick Chin received two honors for his play last week. He was named America East Rookie of the Week, and was named to the National Team of the Week by CollegeSoccerNews.com. He now sits in the top five in the conference in scoring and assists, with 1.33 points per game, and .67 assists per game.
