Main entry: bureaucracy function: noun :government characterized by specialization of functions, adherence to fixed rules, and a hierarchy of authority. (Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary)
Since freshman year I’ve heard tales of the “BUreaucracy”, and now it is more apparent than ever. With the current publicity that our chancellor and acting president (ruler) is receiving, its difficult not be fully aware of and embarrassed by what he stands for and represents. Silber demonstrates that he is a narrow-minded, power-hungry individual time and time again. He displays his insecurities by re-asserting his power repeatedly over what issues cross his own personal boundaries, rather than considering the well-being and growth of the students of BU. I can’t help but laugh at some of his attempts to disguise his oppressive views with careful wording, which can easily be seen through as his own ancient views which have a very small comfort zone. Just to name a few: -The disbanding of BU Academy’s Gay-Straight Alliance. -The LACK of a rape crisis center on our campus. -The immersion of the counseling and wellness center, giving students fewer resources in receiving clinical mental health counseling. -The university’s refusal to include specifically GLBT rights in the anti-discrimination policy of BU. Maybe instead, what he should be doing is taking a look at himself and coming to terms with the narrow views which clearly reflect upon his own person character, morality, and tolerance. If anything, we can thank Silber for bringing to light the fact that there ARE ignorant people in this world, yet no matter how much money they have, or how high their status may be, the voice of tolerance and understanding will still be heard. Silber is giving us a real lesson in dealing with adversity. Silber clearly chooses to stifle many important issues, rather than create a healthy, vocal, pro-active environment where students can deal with controversial topics that affect their lives. Fortunately, we have faculty members and students dedicated to making their causes heard, and not even the prestigious John Silber can silence them. On that note, Silber, just keep in mind that for every intolerant decision you make, you motivate just a few more students to fight for their cause with just a little more strength and dedication. And be forewarned, these passionate students with a view of a more just and accepting world (and university) will not stop fighting their fight. You can reign over this bureaucracy that you have created and continue to use your power accordingly, but the voice of the people won’t be silenced and will prevail. Laura Cote CAS 2004
