Several events, including the striking of a chime and a candlelight vigil, will be held today to remember the one-year anniversary of the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington, D.C.
The chime will be set up in Marsh Plaza, weather permitting, and will be struck every few minutes between 8:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. Hope Luckie, the acting dean of Marsh Chapel, said she hoped the striking of the chime would remind people of the events of Sept. 11.
“We thought the best way to mark the actual time would be also the simplest, so the striking or tolling of the bell would be just to call us to remembrance,” Luckie said. “For those who are walking by, they’ll hear it, and for those on Marsh Plaza, they’ll hear it as well.”
In the evening, the chaplains plan to hold a candlelight vigil to remember the victims of Sept. 11, and to help people move through the grieving process, a “moment of transformation,” according to Luckie.
“It’s a moment in time in which our world really changed,” Luckie said. “I hope not only will the bell call us to remember, but the vigil will help us to move forward and to hope.”
Luckie said several student leaders would be speaking at tonight’s vigil, including a representative from each religious group on campus, members of ROTC, RHA members, and Student Union President Ethan Clay.
“The chaplains are leading and organizing it, and there will be a variety of student voices from all kinds of religions,” Luckie said. “I’m hoping it will be a short service, like half an hour, so people can break up to talk.”
If inclement weather prevents the start of the vigil, Luckie said the service would be moved to the ballroom in the George Sherman Union.
Throughout the day, several prayer services will also take place in various locations around campus. Orthodox Jewish prayer services will be held at 8:00 a.m. and 12:50 p.m. on Marsh Plaza, while Islamic prayer services will be held at 12:43 p.m., 4:22 p.m., 7:13 p.m., and 8:45 p.m. in room 242 of the GSU. Luckie said the times coincide with four of the five times during the day when Muslims pray.
Other prayer services will take place during the day, including a multidenominational prayer worship service from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and a Catholic Mass from 12:10 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. Both events will be held in Marsh Chapel. At 8:30 p.m., a Hindu prayer service will be held in one of the Marsh worship rooms.
Additionally, Robinson Chapel will be open for prayer at 9:30 a.m., and then from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Luckie said students are welcome to come by and pray should they feel the need.
