Both Sides of Gay Tolerance Issue Should be Published

Dear Editor,

I just read the article by Lee Cleghorn, “Gay rights leader upset by cuts” – 09/12/02 in The Daily Free Press.

I was curious to know if this article was intended to be an editorial opinion or if is was meant as a journalistic news story. If it was the latter, I believe that it portrayed a one sided view on the issue.

I think it would have been more balanced if you had included the opposing view (support of the Chancellors action).

As a supporter of equal rights, I personally believe that bigots should have every opportunity to have their positions published for future generations.

In the aftermath of the overt refusal of the administration to include sexual orientation in Boston University’s policy against discrimination, the intentional and deliberate action by Chancellor John Silbur, further strips away from our past great record of leadership on issues of non-discrimination. This deviation from tolerance and acceptance in favor of ignorance and bigotry, makes a mockery out of what Marsh Plaza stands for. No longer should the Boston University Administration have the hypocrisy to mention Dr. King as a distinguished alumnus.

At this first anniversary of the attack against the World Trade Center it is most untimely that the Chancellor would impose such an act of intolerance. It dishonors the memory of the many Boston University alumni whose lives were extinguished by that act of hatred and intolerance.

Please give those who preside over the destruction of BU’s awesome historical record on tolerance the benefit of having their words quoted and published. In so doing, future generations of the BU Community, can learn that even a great organization such as BU can be lead backwards by ignorance and intolerant leaders for whom history will most inevitably judge as oppressors of human dignity.

This digression from our historical record is an embarrassment to Boston University. We all deserve better than to witness the tarnishing of this great institution.

Sincerely,

Calvin Chang MET
