Men’s tennis endures difficult start

The Boston University men’s tennis team’s fall season kicked off last weekend with a round-robin tournament at Assumption College. The exhibition also included the University of New Hampshire and the University of Vermont.

BU got off to a strong start, winning five of eight singles matches. Among the winners were seniors Jason Vinoles, Jon Mofsky and junior Geoff Wagner. All three were starters on last year’s team.

Sophomores Manuel Bulawtan and Chris Kubbacki also performed well for the Terriers. Mainly reserves on last season’s squad, Bulawtan and Kubbacki are trying to play their way into the starting lineup.

The first and second doubles combinations, a weakness for BU in the past, both won on Saturday.

The next day, however, was a different story. Of the eight matches featuring BU players, the Terriers came away victorious in only three. Injuries hurt the Terriers, as senior Jon Mofsky and junior Adam Seigel both had to retire from their singles matches.

BU also lost the second and third position doubles matches on Sunday.

One positive sign is that the Terriers have four freshmen who did not make the trip and have yet to see collegiate competition.

The Terriers’ next match is on Friday through Sunday, Sept. 13 through 15, when they travel to Boston College for the Boston College Invitational. The Terriers host New Hampshire on Wednesday, Sept. 18 following the BC tournament in the only home match of the fall season.
