Just a suggestion

In regards to Wednesday’s article about the poetry reading: Kudos to the Freep for at last writing about an event before it takes place and thus notifying the student body of one of the many events that goes on around our campus. Usually one finds out about such events only after they have taken place, by reading reviews of them the day after in the Freep. The only upcoming events or calendar type sections I’ve ever seen in our paper have had to do with whatever local bands are playing at clubs–nothing whatsoever about performances by B.U. student ensembles or speaking events led by distinguished faculty. When the B.U. campus orchestra gave a concert last week, the only way people knew about it was because the orchestra members were each given a few invitations to distribute to their friends. I don’t read the Freep every single day, so I can’t say for sure whether there was any mention of the upcoming concert, but I would guess there wasn’t any. B.U. is such a diverse school with so many different performing groups and clubs; it is difficult for anyone to keep track of things. I think a small section devoted to upcoming events around campus would be a nice addition to the paper. Student organizations could submit announcements of special events to the paper and let the entire student body know about events before they actually take place. There’s no need to publish this letter; I just wanted to let you know that I think informing students about upcoming events around our school is a really good idea and I hope you’ll continue to let us know about what is happening on campus. Thanks, Anna Hughes CAS ’03 p.s. My only complaint about your article is that you incorrectly reported the location of the poetry reading. The event was held in the Metcalf Science and Engineering building, not in Metcalf Hall on the second floor of the GSU. I think more than a few people were a little late to the reading (myself included) due to the information you provided.
