What’s the deal, O’Brien and Romney?

While Tuesday night’s gubernatorial debate was full of substantive topics, the way I see it, few of the questions asked were actually answered, none by Democrat Shannon O’Brien. As Election Day draws near, I have a few questions I would like to ask the candidates myself.

First, Ms. O’Brien: what are you smirking at? That snide, demeaning, “I can’t believe this guy takes himself seriously” grin is more transparent than a picture window. In Republican Mitt Romney’s own words, it’s “unbecoming.” True. But Mitt, I just can’t comprehend a comment like that, followed by a request to bring the debate “up one notch.” Is that the quintessence of hypocrisy or is it just me? We know you’re a politician — you need not remind us.

Back to Ms. O’Brien: what exactly are “real numbers?” And are you sure you want to tangle on that topic with someone who has a self-made fortune? I’m pretty sure his bank account numbers are real. Which brings us to our next question. Mr. Romney: numbers aside, are you for real? Can the dapper, Hollywood look-alike, virile father of five, multimillionaire Mormon really exist? Call me the eternal cynic but I’ll bet there are some skeletons in that closet of yours. Just a hunch — it’s Halloween.

Next question, could one of you please dare to expose a shred of humanity hidden somewhere in the cockles of your persona (and no Shannon, I don’t want to see your tattoo!)? Oh, and Mitt: the patronizing “father knows best” attitude coupled with a shaking head, rolling eyes and continued glances to the moderator for support don’t count.

Ms. O’Brien: you look worried and you probably should be — I think he has you on the ropes. I’m a Democrat at heart — I want to like you — but I just can’t bring myself to do it.

The fact of the matter is, I could have grown to really like and support either of these candidates if only they had not failed so abysmally at presenting themselves (and each other for that matter). Now I am left embittered, disillusioned and praying superhuman Rudy Giuliani will suddenly appear on Election Day to save us all from this horrible plight. But hey, the guy can’t do everything.
