Death Penalty

As a white male, I took exception to one part of Caroline Linton’s article on the death penalty (Well, I really didn’t agree with any part of the article, but one part really bothered me). She stated that most people on deat row are minorities and they are low and middle class. Why does that even matter? Maybe there are a higher number of minorities because (and this isn’t meant to be racist in any way) minorities are committing the most heinous crimes, crimes that are eligible for the death penalty, at a higher rate. But that can’t be right, can it? Next, we blame it on low-payed public defenders. Do we really want these monsters having someone like Johnny Cochran so they can get away with their crimes? And make no mistake, these people on death row are monsters. They murder and rape without any conscience or morals. They don’t deserve to breathe the air that you and I do. But that can’t be right, can it? So instead, Caroline expounded her views on the death penalty, but made sure to throw in those two points, making sure that anyone who opposes her looks like an elitist, racist pig. Well, I’m from a middle class family, and I am by no means a racist, but I do think that if you kill for pleasure, like the Washington Snipers, or you rape and murder a child, you should die, plain and simple. With areticles like Caroline’s, its no wonder that people call this paper “liberal.”
