Tom Petty

Not to be mistaken for hygienic products, Tom Petty and Jackson Browne have become one of the most celebrated tandems to tour in America. Petty, an icon of classic rock is complemented nicely with the gentle soul and blues of the ageless Jackson Browne, one of the most underrated musicians in the past 3 decades. Having last toured together in 2001, the acclaimed duo is back together following Petty’s release of his new album.

Petty’s story is a popular one, having been a rock veteran for almost a quarter decade. His music took flight first in 1977 and has seemingly evolved, progressed and undoubtedly improved with time. His most popular songs like ‘Free-Falling’ and ‘Won’t Back Down’ have become imprints of American culture and can likened to the great work of Bob Dylan, Neil Young and others. His concert presence and music once earned him the title of “King of the Road.”

Jackson Browne, on the other end, has always taken a lesser-known route to stardom. In fact, his most popular appearance in rock history involves his troubled relationship with Nico (and Lou Reed). Jackson Browne is one of those artists that fall under the “he-sang-that?” list – his most popular hits being ‘Doctor My Eyes,’ ‘Stay’ (a radio staple and soulful cover) and the big hit ‘Running on Empty,’ which curiously gets played a lot at Red Sox games. Browne has a very subtle and dynamic approach to different styles of music – sometimes going from a southern rock to a smooth reggae-R’B even. His songwriting and music are always a reflection of his inner demons, political philosophy and self-discovery.

Seeing Petty and Browne really offers a unique chance to catch the essence of soulful and soul-stirring rock that is becoming ever more rare in the music scene now. Both, legends of classic rock provide a great display of contrasting guitars – one gentle and graceful, the other hard-edged and resounding.

It is pretty safe to say that Petty has not lost any of his on stage abilities as a performer and having come off a recent tour in 2001, Petty and Browne will certainly be on their A-game. See them now and revisit a time when rock performers were truly committed to meaning and importance in their musical artistry.

Tom Petty ‘ the Heartbreakers and Jackson Browne will be at the Fleet Center on Saturday, Dec. 14. Limited tickets are still available. Log on to www.ticketmaster.com or call 617-931-2000.
