CAS Dean Henderson dines with students and listens to concerns

College of Arts and Sciences Dean Jeffrey Henderson hosted his second monthly dinner with CAS students last night in the George Sherman Union Academy room.

Only about eight students turned out for the event, to which Henderson responded he did not expect a lot of students due to the time of year.

According to Henderson, the dinners allow him to get in touch with his students.

‘I like to get back and see students,’ Henderson said. ‘It’s fun for me to get out and hang out with students.’

Henderson also emphasized the importance of the administration’s availability to address student concerns.

‘It’s good for students to know that their administration is listening to them and that you can make the dean aware of your concerns directly,’ Henderson said.

Topics ranged from politics, civil rights and Chancellor Silber’s upcoming question-and-answer session with the student body to lighter subjects such as books, movies and chess. The dean said he hoped students at Silber’s address would not center their complaints solely on student life.

‘I’m just hoping that academics will come up,’ Henderson said.

Henderson explained Silber’s views stem from the fact he grew up in a completely different generation where things such as homosexuality were not tolerated. Therefore, there are simply certain characteristics of one generation other generations will never understand, Henderson said. However, he said the student body is lucky that Silber has an intense interest in the campus.

The dean also said he is content at Boston University.

‘I’ve been here longer than I’ve been anywhere else and I have no desire to leave,’ Henderson said. ‘It’s a great place.’

Overall dinner guests said they were pleased with the dean’s invitation.
