Silber Talk

Dear Editor,

I wanted to write in response to the Silber talk tonight at SMG. I did read the article in the Free Press about the forum and was aware of the limited amount of space. I tried to get there as soon after my classes as possible and arrived 6:55 p.m. only to see that, along with about 20-30 other students, I was shut out from seeing the talk because fire codes would not facilitate standing room.

I realize the talk was scheduled only two days ago and, understandably, there was not enough time to organize some overflow room where it could be broadcast live. I also realize it’s my own fault for not arriving there earlier.

I would like to thank the Student Union for their quick organization with this event. I guess I just wanted to say that its a shame that an open discussion for the general BU public was not accessible to everyone. I attend these events all of the time and I see the same people at the forefront time and time again.

But there are a lot of average students out there that aren’t really active on campus, don’t get much public recognition and don’t get a chance to work with the administration on a regular basis. And they deserve to see their president speak as well.

I really respect Ethan Clay and the Union for all of their positive efforts campus. I’m more impressed with their work than any of the other slates over the past four years. Obviously hard work does merit some priviledge. However, maybe in situations like this, THEY should be the ones graciously giving up their seats, allowing room for some of those people that wouldn’t really get a chance for this type of interaction otherwise.

I promise I’m not trying to burn any bridges. I just know that I saw about 30 disappointed faces outside SMG and the more that I thought about it, it just didn’t seem right.

Thanks again for the collaborative effort in organizing this event. It obviously evoked a big response from the students. Next time I’ll be sure to get there sooner.
