After a split this past weekend against the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, the Boston University hockey team gets right back at it, heading to upstate New York to battle Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute tonight.
The Icedogs enter the game coming off a 3-1 win Saturday at Walter Brown Arena against the Minutemen. The game followed a 5-4 overtime loss to Massachusetts on Friday in Amherst.
BU’s record now stands at 8-6-2, while RPI has a 7-8-1 (2-4-1 ECAC) mark.
The two teams have already met once this season in the Ice Breaker Tournament final. The Terriers were too much for the Engineers that night, winning, 5-1, with sophomore center David Klema scoring the game-winner. BU also prevailed over RPI last season, opening its year with a 6-5 victory.
BU will be looking to get back on a winning track after losing three of its last four contests. After a weekend sweep by Cornell University in Ithaca, BU’s disappointment continued with the shocking overtime defeat to an up-and-coming Massachusetts team.
With a 3-1-1 road record through their first six contests away from Walter Brown, the Icedogs established themselves as a force on the road, but three straight road losses puts that kind of a reputation in doubt. BU doesn’t play in the close quarters of Walter Brown until Jan. 5 when it takes on rival Northeastern University.
BU is now ranked No. 14, a drop of one spot from last week, and ten spots since Oct. 14th, when the Icedogs were only two games into the year. The last month has seen BU struggle, and it will look to the games over holiday break, essentially starting tonight, to creep back into national contender status.
