Members of the Boston University Board of Trustees Thursday unanimously elected Connecticut lawyer Christopher A. Barreca as the board’s new chairman, as former Chairman Richard B. DeWolfe officially stepped down after less than two years heading the board.
Barreca, a former Trustees vice chairman, takes over the top position in the middle of the university’s search for a new president, after former president Jon Westling’s early-July resignation. Barreca is a 1953 graduate of BU’s School of Law after attending Boston University’s General College. He is currently senior council at the Stamford, Conn. office of law firm Paul, Hastings, Janofsky and Walker.
John Hancock Financial Services, Inc. CEO David D’Alessandro, the board’s other vice chairman, was also thought to be a candidate for the job in the days before the meeting, according to The Boston Globe.
“Chris Barreca is an extraordinarily generous and loyal trustee,” DeWolfe said in a press release. “He has dedicated himself to the advancement of Boston University from the first day following his graduation from BU, and his service has proved that.”
DeWolfe, a 1971 BU graduate who took the chairmanship in 2001, announced in November that he would resign the post to start a new business venture. He sold his business DeWolfe Companies Inc., the largest real estate firm in New England, last summer for $149 million.
