The performing arts are alive and well at Boston University, but unfortunately you’d never know it by reading The Daily Free Press. Granted, the Muse sometimes prints reviews of plays and concerts around Boston, but what about the high quality performances on campus?
Every weekend numerous student a cappella, music, theater and dance groups give stellar performances across campus, but the student newspaper very rarely covers this aspect of student life.
The DFP shot photos of On Broadway’s recent production of ‘Songs for a New World’ and then never printed them for some unknown reason. Maybe because they thought that full-page filler ads were more important. And why was there no mention of the incredible performance by the BU Symphonic Choir and Orchestra at Symphony Hall in November? Or the dozens of other fabulous productions and concerts by the College of Fine Arts and student groups every semester?
These performances are definitely on par with those in and around Boston and would benefit from a little recognition and publicity in the DFP. Student performers are just as committed to their craft as student athletes and receive only a fraction of the appreciation. I urge The Daily Free Press to open their eyes to the fabulous performances in our own backyard and start recognizing their cultural importance to student life at BU.
