Meinhardt, Bell ring in hoops awards

It was a good week for Boston University basketball, as sophomore forward Rashad Bell and freshmen guard Katie Meinhardt were recognized by the America East Conference.

Bell shared the honor of America East Men’s Basketball Co-Player of the Week with Binghamton University’s Anthony Green after two great performances against The University of Albany and the University of Vermont last week.

In the Jan. 8 victory against Albany, Bell set a team record for free throws in a game without a miss, going 13 for 13 from the stripe. Bell tied his career scoring high of 21 points, completing all 13 free throws attempted and shooting four for 10 from the field. He also grabbed a game-high eight rebounds, blocked two shots and registered a steal and an assist.

In the Jan. 11 victory against Vermont, Bell blocked a career high five shots helping the team set a new blocked shots record with 12. Bell also scored 12 points and had five rebounds. He came up big for BU down the stretch, hitting three of four key free throws in the final minutes.

Bell leads BU with 11 blocked shots. His 4.9 rebounds-per-game average is tied for second best on the team, and his 8.1 scoring average is fourth best. This was the first Player of the Week award for Bell.

Katie Meinhardt received what will hopefully be the first of many accolades in her collegiate career, as she was named America East Women’s Basketball Co-Rookie of the week, along with Hartford’s Danielle Wexler.

Meinhardt put together three consecutive double-figure scoring efforts, culminating with a team-high 21 points against Vermont Jan. 12. Her scoring total was aided by a season high five three-pointers.

Meinhardt started her scoring streak with 24 points against Farleigh Dickinson on Jan. 5. She also added 11 points and six rebounds in BU’s first America East win of the season against Albany Jan. 9.

Meinhardt missed the first four games of the season with an elbow injury she suffered during a pre-season workout. She came back Dec. 6 against Montana State and was promoted to the starting lineup four games later. Meinhardt is third on the team in scoring with 9.2 points per game and in assists with 2.0 assists per game.
