Hockey player faces charges

Boston University ice hockey player John Sabo, a senior in Boston University’s Metropolitan College and forward and assistant captain for the team, will face charges of assault and battery at an arraignment Feb. 4, according to Suffolk District Attorney spokesman David Procopio.

Sabo, 21, allegedly assaulted a fellow BU student outside an Allston bar last year, according to The Boston Globe. According to a Brighton Police District incident report from Sept. 22, 2002, obtained by the Free Press, Christopher Boccuzzi of 5 Larkhill Rd., West Roxbury, claimed he was assaulted by a BU hockey player named ‘Christopher Sabo’ after leaving The Avenue.

Boccuzzi claimed six to eight other people, including other BU hockey players, attacked him as well, the report said. The report described him as having a ‘bloodied face’ and ‘swelling to the left side of his face.’

Sabo was unavailable for comment this weekend.

Sabo will be arraigned on charges of assault and battery, assault with a dangerous weapon, his foot, mayhem and threats. The Brighton District Court issued the charges on Thursday, according to the Boston Globe.

Although the report mentioned other assailants, Sabo is the only person being charged, Procopio said. Since the District Attorney’s office did not initiate the investigation, they now have to review the charges brought by the Brighton Court.

BU hockey coach Jack Parker and Director of Sports Information Ed Carpenter had no comment on the arraignment over the weekend.

Sabo has played in all 26 hockey games this season, scoring nine goals and eight assists.
