Kickboxing instructors not “perky”

Although I appreciated Kevin Joy’s article on Punk Rock Aerobics, I would like to correct something he said (‘Spandex Revolution,’ Jan. 24, pg. 5). He seems to insinuate that Tae Bo and kickboxing are the same thing. Actually kickboxing is a serious martial art that teaches discipline and self-defense while Tae Bo is an aerobics class where form is hardly taught at all. I have never attended a Tae Bo class, so presumably Mr. Joy is correct in his assumption that all their instructors are ‘the perky, Lycra-wearing ex-cheerleader types,’ but in the past two and a half years that I have been practicing San Shou (Chinese kickboxing), never have I had an instructor who I would be able to describe as ‘perky.’ But strict, dedicated national and world champions who have a desire to share their knowledge and love of the sport with others, absolutely.
