Swimmers leave Vermont in their wake

Outmatched: A word to describe the University of Vermont men’s and women’s swimming teams this past Saturday against the Boston University Terriers. The men dominated Vermont with a 219-43 score, winning first place in all 16 events. The women also had an impressive victory, defeating the Catamounts by a score of 220-76, also placing first in all 16 events.

Junior Kelli Sweeting swam her best meet of the season. According to BU Coach Reagh Wetmore, Sweeting posted her best times in both the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke competitions, finishing in 1:01.92 and 2:10, respectively.

On the men’s side, freshman Mike Kelly proved impressive, also posting his best times of the season in two competitions. In the 100-yard butterfly, Kelly finished with a time of 53.32 seconds, while in the 50 yard free style, he finished in an astounding 21.95 seconds.

‘That’s incredibly fast,’ Wetmore said of his freshman’s feat.

The Terriers dominated on the diving board on Saturday as well. Silvia Golle, a junior transfer student from Germany is undefeated on the road in her first year as a Terrier. Golle, who is among the top divers in the America East conference, received a score of 292.51 on her three-meter dive.

Sophomore Victor Paguia, who has had a very strong season, finishing first place even in losing team efforts in the past, was no less impressive on Saturday in the victory against Vermont, winning both the one-meter and three-meter events. In the one-meter, Paguia received a score of 292.95 points, while tallying a score of 306.00 for his 3-meter dive.

With the victory, the men’s team upped its record this season is 3-4 overall, with a 3-1 record against America East conference teams, falling only to Stony Brook University. The women also have a 3-4 record overall, with a 3-2 record against America East opponents.

Wetmore believes his men could take first place this year repeating last year’s championship, or else finish ‘no worse than second’ in the America East. The outlook for the women’s team is slightly less promising, with three-time defending champion Northeastern University leading the America East pack. According to Wetmore, Northeastern will face some serious competition this season from a revamped University of New Hampshire squad.

‘They [New Hampshire] may even beat Northeastern this year’ Wetmore noted.

With just one meet left in the season, both the men and women hit the road to face off at the University of Rhode Island on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
