Discuss abortion seriously

The lighthearted tone of two ‘pro-choice’ letters in the Jan. 29 issue of The Daily Free Press was both troubling and indicative of what I see as the larger issue surrounding the abortion debate (‘Avoid abortion, make money;’ ‘Abortion frees college students,’ pg. 6).

Clearly, the authors of these two letters, though they should be applauded for their efforts to show the issue in a new light something few pro-life authors even attempted have no concept of the emotional, psychological and physical impact of choosing to have an abortion.

Having an abortion, in most cases, has little to do with money or promiscuity. It has to do with personal beliefs and knowledge of one’s own potential or limitations; no matter what situation under which the decision to have an abortion is made, it is never lighthearted, and the implication that it could be is insulting to those women who have been put in the unfortunate place to have to make it.

Abortion has to do with choice. As close-minded as this may sound, I believe the only people who can truly understand the issues are those who have experienced the multifaceted pain firsthand. So let’s leave it to them, to decide, grieve and recover alone, without the input of the government or a judgmental (on both sides) audience of peers.
