Three senators resign, citing health, academics and “lack of interest”

Three went out and one came in last night, as Boston University Student Union officials announced the resignation of Senators Peter Scordo, Lauren Traczykowski and Jason Samuel and swearing in of new Hamilton House senator Aaronthomas Green at their weekly Senate meeting.

According to Senate chairman Joel Fajardo, Scordo, a former senator from West Campus, resigned due to a medical condition, which caused him to completely withdraw from BU for the semester.

Fajardo said Samuel, a former senator from the College of Fine Arts, resigned due to a ‘lack of interest,’ while former South Campus senator Traczykowski relinquished her position to ‘focus on academics.’

According to Union officials, the Senate positions will remain open until the Student Union Election Commission suggests appointments at future meetings.

The Senate also allocated $200 to the Boston University Debate Society for their annual tournament this weekend, and $500 to the Senior Week Committee for their ‘100 Days ‘Til Graduation’ celebration.

Originally the Debate Society had requested $1200 to fund the tournament BU is hosting this weekend, but the Union’s financial review board described the Debate Society’s presentation as ‘disorganized’ and recommended allocating only $200 to the group.

According to committee representatives, the $500 allocated to the Senior Week Committee will help provide food for the organization’s celebration this Wednesday at Club La Boom recognizing the 100 day countdown until graduation.

The Safety Services Committee also presented two guest speakers from the Boston University Police Department to discuss a property and bike registration program expected to take place at the end of this month, according to Union officials.

According to the BUPD, the program will encode items such as laptop computers, cell phones and bikes with serial numbers that will then be transferred into a computer database. The serial numbers will aid the BUPD in matching recovered items with stolen ones that have been reported.
