Awards abundant on the ice and hardwood

Boston University junior goaltender Sean Fields better look out above while he sleeps.

His award shelf is about to collapse.

Already with an Eberly trophy as the best goalie in the Beanpot and the tournament Most Valuable Player award to his credit, Fields was honored as the Hockey East Co-Defensive Player of the Week, sharing the award with Boston College defenseman J.D. Forrest.

Amazingly, the award was for the week ending on Sunday, Feb. 9, and did not take into account his 31-save MVP performance in Monday’s Beanpot Championship game against BC.

Fields led the Icedogs to a 2-1 win over Harvard University on Feb. 2, stopping 28 of 29 Crimson shots. He backed up that performance with a 25-save shutout performance at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst on Friday.

Going back to a game against Merrimack College two weeks ago, Fields has allowed three goals in his last 240 minutes of ice time, including two shutouts.

It is the second time Fields has received the honor, and the sixth time a Terrier has received one of Hockey East’s three weekly awards, just this season.

RINGING THE BELL

Sophomore forward Rashad Bell was named America East Player of the Week on Monday. It was the second time this season that Bell received the honor. In January, Bell shared the award with Binghamton University’s Anthony Green.

In two wins last week against the University at Albany and Binghamton, Bell averaged 16 points and 8.5 rebounds.

In a 78-50 win over the Great Danes on Wednesday, Bell notched his first career double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. On Sunday, Bell scored 16 again, to go along with six rebounds.

Bell’s new scoring touch can be attributed to bulking up in the off-season and the development of a mid-range jumper not in his repertoire last year. His ability to knock down a 15-footer is forcing defenders to play up on him, at which point he can drive to the basket and finish. He is also third in the conference in free throw shooting, making him very difficult to guard.

So far this season, on a team that prides itself on balanced scoring, Bell has been the one constant, and the likely MVP of the squad.

Bell is the third Terrier to win the Player of the Week award this season, joining senior forward Billy Collins and junior guard Matt Turner.

TRIPLE TIMER

For the third time this season, freshman guard Katie Meinhardt was named the America East Rookie of the Week. This award comes after a week that saw Meinhardt score a game-high 18 points against Albany, including the deciding three-point play in the closing seconds to propel the Terriers to victory.

Meinhardt is the first Terrier freshman to earn the honor three times since now junior guard Katie Terhune accomplished the feat during her freshman campaign. Since her comeback from a preseason injury, Meinhardt has been one of the Terriers’ most valuable players, and is the front-runner to take home America East Rookie of the Year honors.
