Escorts provide safety, not free rides

I work for the Escort Security Service on Friday and Saturday nights. In response to Hali Narins’ letter in Wednesday’s Daily Free Press, I would like to straighten some things out (‘Escort Service leaves student cold,’ Feb. 12, pg. 6). First, on Saturday the escort van was running. Friday, however, it was shut down due to icy roads. Second, the supervisor would not have said the escort was closed; he would have said the van wasn’t running and offered walkers (a walker being an employee of the Escort Security Service, such as myself, whose main job is to escort people by walking with them in the interest of their safety.)

I think Hali confused the Escort Security Service with some sort of transportation service. The van is there for the safety of students, not to be some taxi or shuttle bus. And saying that Boston University (meaning in this case the Escort Service) would leave someone alone in the dead of night means someone wasn’t paying much attention to what they were being told on the phone. Most people who call the Escort Service are just too lazy or tired to walk, and they want a free ride. I know this because over the last few weeks I have done maybe one walk per night, and sometimes none at all, because if people find out they cannot get the van or the van will take too long, they take the ‘T,’ a cab or even just walk by their own choice. In any case, there are two points I want to make clear: First, the escort service is not a transportation service. Second, the escort would not leave anybody alone during operational hours (between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m. on weekdays, to 3 a.m. on Friday and Saturday) provided there are two walkers (and I can assure you, there were).
