CD Review: Paul Van Dyk, Global

With a wide assortment of releases under his belt and a constant stream of appearances at clubs all over the globe, Paul Van Dyk is the darling DJ of the Euro set.

A sort of ‘best-of’ compilation culled from Van Dyk’s 10 years of work, Global, Van Dyk’s latest CD/DVD release, is standard club fare without any redeeming qualities. Who enjoys listening to this kind of music in the comfort of their own home, except those wishing to recreate the fond memories of sweaty, anonymous gropes and expensive drinks?

‘Tell Me Why’ spent weeks at the top of the German dance charts, and here’s precisely why: it’s a song, and you can dance to it. It sounds scarcely different from any other dance song, but you can bet those synth hand claps and repetitive lyrics are intrinsic to a chart-topping track. The power-ballad piano at the end of ‘Beautiful Place,’ combined with female vocals whispering the titular adjective, makes for a dated track straight out of the early 90s.

Paul Van Dyk is good at what he does: making dance music for a night out. But he fails to show why there’s a good reason to bring it home.
