Awareness of History’s Trend to Repeat

In 1975 American troops returned home from a long and horrible war only to be greeted by mobs of angry Vietnam war protesters. There were no celebrations, no comforting and reassuring of the troops and as a result many soldiers suffered long term psychological problems from the war as well as from the anger of their fellow Americans.

Today, well over 200,000 Americans are somewhere in the Middle East either preparing for or actually involved in war on Iraq. At home, millions of people protest the war everyday with marches, signs, walkouts and sit-ins.

I write this letter for neither pro-war nor anti-war reasons, nor do I mean to repress anyone’s right to free speech. Instead, I write this article in an attempt to bring awareness to the unfortunate truth that history tends to repeat itself.

Whether you support it or not, hundreds of thousands of Americans both at home and in the Middle East are involved in a war right now. These soldiers are Americans just like you and me, some of them want to be there, some of didn’t realize what they were getting into. Either way, they need our support as a country both now and when they come home.

Regardless of whether or not you support the war against Iraq, be sure you don’t support hate–to the people of Iraq or our neighbors who are just doing their duty and fighting the war. Thank you,
