Terrier tennis teams serve up some big wins

The phrase ‘timing is everything’ couldn’t be more true for the Boston University men’s and women’s tennis teams. With both squads coming off a number of tough losses in past weeks, each team posted much-needed wins in its recent matches.

The men’s tennis team (2-6, 1-1 in America East) earned a tough 5-2 victory over the College of the Holy Cross this past Tuesday. The hard-fought win comes almost a week after the Terriers snapped their six-match losing skid with a 5-2 win over Fairfield University on March 19. The team had previously gone 0-5 during its Spring Break tour in Colorado, losing difficult matches against Denver University and the Air Force Academy.

‘After the tough road trip, it was nice to get these wins under our belts,’ said senior captain Jason Vinoles. ‘We are finally getting some depth in the lineup and we are really capitalizing.’

The Terriers got off on the right foot against the Crusaders of Holy Cross by winning all three doubles matches to get the doubles point. The No. 1 team of juniors Geoffrey Wagner and Adam Siegel won their match 8-3, while seniors J.P. Debbink and Jason Vinoles won 8-6 at the No. 2 doubles spot. Senior Noel Moossa and freshmen Nick Ganias won their No. 3 doubles match 8-5.

In singles play, Wagner cleaned up at the No. 1 position, winning in straight sets 6-1, 6-3 while Siegel won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Debbink picked up a win at the four spot with a 6-4, 7-6 (10-8) victory as Vinoles, at No. 5 singles, won 6-3, 6-2. Moossa dropped his No. 3 singles match 6-4, 7-5 and senior Julian Delacruz lost a rough match at the six spot, losing 6-0, 1-6, 4-6.

The men’s team looks to continue their winning ways this weekend with matches against Binghamton College on Saturday, and Boston College on Sunday.

WOMEN’S TENNIS After dropping difficult matches to the University of North Carolina, North Carolina State and Miami University over the last two weeks, the women’s tennis team came away with a 7-0 victory over Seton Hall University this past Sunday.

‘We had just come off some really tough matches,’ said Coach Lesley Sheehan. ‘We had to play well to win, and we did.’

The Terriers started out the day by winning two out of three doubles matches to get the point. Junior Lindsey Dynof and freshmen Aimee Charest won at the No. 2 position, 8-3, while senior captain Alana Marcu and junior Elisa Glas also won 8-3 at the three spot. Junior Elena deMendoza and freshman Laura Ahmes went down 9-8 in a hard-fought match at first doubles.

Dynof won her second match of the day at the No. 1 singles spot, 6-3, 6-2, and Charest followed suit with a 6-0, 6-0 trouncing at the six position.

DeMendoza pulled out a 6-4, 1-6, 10-7 win at No. 2 singles while Ahmes won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3. Both Marcu (6-1, 6-0) and Glas (6-1, 6-2) won handily at the No. 4 and No. 5 singles positions, respectively.

Coach Sheehan was pleased with her team’s performance.

‘Everyone played well, especially coming off a couple of losses.’

The women’s team looks forward to a home match against Dartmouth College this Sunday. It will be the first time BU will play Dartmouth in the school’s new Track and Tennis Center.
