China program warns about ‘flu’

Boston University students studying abroad in Asia have been urged to ‘use extra caution,’ according to Eric Miller, the Resident Director of CET Academic Programs in Beijing, as cases of the mysterious Asian ‘flu’ epidemic continued to rise yesterday in Hong Kong.

The epidemic has infected more than 1,600 and killed at least 60 people worldwide, according to The Washington Post. The unknown virus causes severe acute respiratory syndrome, whose first symptoms are flu-like.

Joseph Finkhouse, director of Student Affairs and International Education for the Office of International Programs, said the program has alerted several programs.

‘We have alerted out people in China, as well as in Australia and New Zealand,’ about travel warnings for Vietnam and Indonesia issued by the U.S. State Department, Finkhouse said. ‘Students in Beijing have been instructed not to travel to the affected areas,’ which include southern China.
