Appeals to reason valued

Jason Cammarata has quickly become my favorite opinion columnist of the The Daily Free Press. As a student who is disappointed with the College of Communication, I was very pleased with Mr. Cammarata’s criticism on the brand of journalism that is taught at BU.

I also appreciated his vituperation on the pro-war and anti-war camps (“Please shut up and die now, thanks,” March 27, pg. 11). There are many of us who desire to be politically active as the situation in Iraq develops but refuse to align ourselves with either side due to the oversimplification and “seesawing hee-hawing about blood, oil, Hitler and chemical warheads…” that has been prevalent thus far. I doubt the beleaguered Iraqi people appreciate the fact that there are thousands of college students willing to take a nap for them at Government Center, nor do I understand how placards that read “Protesters = Terrorists” are supposed to prove a damn thing.

I am grateful for dissent and disagreement over any issue, but I am even more appreciative of writers such as Mr. Cammarata who issue appeals for the advancement of reason and critical thinking. Thank you, Mr. Cammarata, for rejuvenating my hope for a better tomorrow.
