‘True’ again: Slate sequel wins election

The ‘True 2’ slate was overwhelmingly elected next year’s Student Union Executive Board yesterday, defeating slates ‘Truants’ and ‘URANUS.’

‘True 2’ garnered 58.3 percent of Union e-board voters over the three-day election period, Student Union Election Commission officials said. ‘URANUS’ and ‘Truants’ received 21.4 and 20.3 percent respectively. In total, 2,585 voters cast ballots in the e-board elections, down 572 from last year’s elections.

Four members of this year’s e-board, lead by current vice president of Student Affairs Carl Woog, will return to the e-board next year, along with four current Union senators.

‘True 2’ slate members hugged each other and made calls to loved ones after hearing the news in an announcement ceremony yesterday in the George Sherman Union.

Current president Ethan Clay embraced Woog after election results were announced.

‘Congratulations, Mr. President,’ Clay said as the two hugged.

Vice president of Student Affairs-elect Erik Dawson was speechless after the results were announced.

‘I feel great,’ he said. ‘This is great, I am so excited I don’t know what to say.’

VP of Public Relations Giovanna Loiotile also expressed her shock and relief.

‘I am really excited,’ she said. ‘This is an overwhelmingly awesome feeling.’

Only ‘True 2’ and ‘Truants’ showed up for the entirety of yesterday’s announcement event. The ‘URANUS’ slate came late, after the announcement had been made.

‘We did stop by to find out what the results were,’ ‘URANUS’ VP of Public Relations candidate Nicholas Pasquale said. ‘We more or less expected ‘True 2′ to win. We were a little surprised by the disparity of votes we were happy to get the response we did.’

‘Truants’ slate members left immediately after results were announced and could not be reached for comment last night.

President-elect Woog said he is very excited about the victory, and said the e-board will get to work on next year’s initiatives as soon as possible.

‘We have a lot of work to do for the student body,’ he said. ‘I know we are looking forward to moving forward right away.’

The slate will begin working this summer, he said.

‘We have a lot of new students to meet we have a few good months of work ahead of us to try and accommodate these goals,’ he said.

Woog also said one of the first actions the e-board will take will be to look into SUEC’s operation of elections themselves.

‘We learned a lot during this campaign and we learned that we need to act on certain issues that affect the Union internally right away,’ he said. ‘I call on the Senate to use their abilities to hold a hearing to ask questions of the elections commissions let’s find out if this is the best way to run elections.’

More than 18 percent of undergraduate students who could vote actually did vote in the elections this year, a number Woog said should be higher.

‘We are proud that over 18 percent voted,’ he said. ‘We would like to increase that number in the future. We would have liked to have solid competition after the first deadline.’

In the other two contested college government elections, School of Management slate ‘Absolute’ was victorious over ‘Just Think’ by 90 votes and the College of General Studies slate ‘Now Iz the Time’ beat ‘Creating Great Strides’ by 26 votes.
