Tennis swings, misses in Vermont

The Boston University men’s tennis team lost both of its matches over the weekend, suffering a 7-0 shutout against the University of Vermont and a 5-2 defeat against Montreal. The men were also scheduled to play the Bearcats of Binghamton University, but the match was canceled due to inclement weather.

The two losses left the Terriers with an overall record of 3-10, while Friday’s loss to the Catamounts dropped their conference record to 1-2 with only two conference matches left before the start of the America East Tournament.

Senior captain Jason Vinoles called the loss to Vermont ‘a heartbreaker,’ pointing out that the loss came to the same Vermont team the Terriers defeated twice last season.

On Saturday against Montreal, the Terriers got off to a good start, winning the doubles point and taking a 2-0 lead after junior Geoff Wagner won the opening singles match. But the Terriers could not capitalize on the momentum from the early wins and dropped the next five singles matches to lose by a final score of 5-2.

The loss extended the Terriers’ losing streak to a total of four games. The Terriers have not won a match since their 5-2 victory against The College of the Holy Cross on March 25. However, despite the current slide, the team remains determined.

‘No one’s giving up,’ says Vinoles.

‘[We] can’t let one loss bother [us] too much,’ Wagner added. ‘Everyone’s committed to a good finish.’

The Terriers have only three matches left in the season and, most importantly, only two conference matches left before the tournament. The team will play the University of New Hampshire on April 12, and the University of Hartford on April 17.

The Terriers defeated New Hampshire earlier this season by a score of 6-1. The only point the Terriers lost in that match was when New Hampshire’s Mark Prather defeated BU sophomore Jimmy Arakanji by a score of 6-4, 6-1.

The team still aims for the goal of having a winning conference record when the tournament begins.

‘Obviously, we’d like to have a good end to the season,’ Wagner said.

The Terriers have only one non-conference match left on their schedule, a home contest against Quinnipiac University on April 13. The America East Tournament begins eight days later on April 25.

On the women’s side, the lone weekend match for the Boston University women’s team, against the University of Massachusetts on Saturday, was also canceled due to the weather.

This year the Terrier women have compiled an overall record of 7-9, but are 2-0 in the America East. The Terriers closed out the month of March with a two-match winning streak, defeating both Seton Hall University and Dartmouth College by scores of 7-0. This streak signals a major turnaround after the team began the month with a seven-match losing streak.

The Terriers look to carry this momentum into their final three matches against Boston College, Yale University and Quinnipiac before beginning the America East Tournament on April 25 in New Haven, Conn. Their next match is a home contest against BC on April 12.
