True 2′ set to fight for cable

After their landslide victory in this year’s Student Union Executive Board elections, the ‘True 2’ slate will begin focusing on their main goal of bringing educational cable to campus as soon as possible, slate members said last night.

Much like the ‘True’ slate did with guest policy reform, the ‘True 2’ slate said they will look into bringing cable to campus through extensive research and formal proposals to administrators, according to president-elect Carl Woog.

‘We would like to start [the proposal for cable] right away this summer by continuing to talk with upper-level administrators about the feasibility,’ Woog said.

Woog said opening up students’ abilities to get cable, educational or not, on campus should not be difficult because much of the campus is already wired for it.

‘We know that the technology is available to decide what channels the students will view,’ Woog said.

The technology would also allow BU to host a local-access channel that could showcase projects from College of Communication students, air Student Union Senate meetings and act as a movie channel, Woog said.

Woog said he believes administrators will only bring cable to campus if given hard facts to support the Union’s reasons for the changes, much like their response to the process for making changes to the guest policy.

‘We suspect the administration will say to us ‘please bring us the exact details of this technology so we may decide on implementation,” he said. ‘We will be prepared to do that research.’

Another major proposal the slate would like to address is examining the current escort service to see if it could be modified for better use, Woog said.

Woog said a majority of the work would be done over the summer for many of the proposals ‘True 2’ advocated for during the campaign. However, one of the major goals of the slate is to welcome incoming freshmen to the university, Woog said.

‘[We want to connect freshman] students to the BU community through intense orientation,’ he said. ‘We’d like to recruit matriculating freshmen directly into student government activities.’

Besides working for cable and working with freshmen, the e-board plans to continue its work on reforming the constitution, creating a 24-hour study lounge and updating the Union website. Making the Union website more of a resource to the BU community is one of the main short-term goals, according to Woog.

‘[We want to change] the overall appearance to increase its ease of usage, and include a calendar of student events,’ he said.

Despite having a lot of goals they wish to accomplish, Woog said he believes the e-board is up to the challenge.

‘We are confident that we will be able to put all these goals in motion,’ he said. ‘We have learned that some matters require considerable debate by those who have the position to make the final decision we learned that during the guest policy improvement.’

As for the student representative position on the presidential search committee that is currently held by Union president Ethan Clay, Woog said he is unsure of how that position would be filled, if at all by the Union.

‘I have not heard how the trustees wish to approach that issues we are not sure,’ Woog said.

The ‘True 2’ slate will be officially sworn in at the final Senate meeting of the year, scheduled for May 5.
