BIG can boost political involvement

The news that Boston Intercollegiate Government has formed and met with Mayor Menino is very exciting (“Four schools show as Menino addresses BIG,” April 3, pg. 1)! Although I’m not a Boston University student, I’ve worked to train and support groups at BU to register voters and increase student turnout since early 2000, and I read your paper all the time. My organization hosts the Boston Youth Vote Coalition, and as a coalition we are so happy to see students moving from running incredibly successful voting campaigns on campus to organizing on the city-wide level.

Students have incredible potential to build a Boston-area voting bloc around issues that students feel strongly about tuition increases and school funding, the environment and more. It’s not surprising that Mayor Menino encouraged BIG to focus on volunteering rather than building the political power of Boston students. Boston has so many students that BIG has the unique potential to re-write Boston politics and make politicians accountable to the interests of our generation or risk loosing their seats. Props to BIG and Carl Woog for maintaining their political focus.
