May 8: Lacrosse falls short of first-ever NCAA Tourney win

Despite playing a close and hard-fought game, the Boston University lacrosse team, ranked 20th in the nation, lost to No. 7 Dartmouth College, 9-7, in opening round of the NCAA Tournament on May 8.

With the win, Dartmouth (11-4, 6-1) advances to the quarterfinals to play at the University of Maryland, the tournament’s second seed, on May 11. BU saw its program-record winning streak snapped at 12 games and ended its season with an overall record of 14-5.

The Terriers played the Big Green tough, trailing 6-5 at intermission. Sophomore midfielder Alyssa Trudel scored two first half goals despite facing double and triple-teams all afternoon. For Dartmouth, sophomore midfielder Katieanne Christian led the offensive attack, scoring all of her team-high four goals in the first half.

In the second half, Dartmouth extended its lead to 8-5 with just under 22 minutes remaining, but BU freshman attacker Lindsay Lewis scored two goals on free shots in the next six minutes to bring the Terriers within one goal. Lewis led BU with four scores on the day.

Freshman attacker Mary Beth Miller had a chance to tie the game for BU with 11 minutes left, but her shot hit the post. After the close call, Dartmouth maintained possession for most of the remainder of the game, and freshman midfielder Casey Hazel netted Dartmouth’s final goal with three minutes left to seal the win for Big Green.

Though BU failed to win its first NCAA tournament game in program history, the two-time defending America East Champion Terriers return nine starters and 21 letterwinners in 2004, including nine All-Conference selections.
