There are rabid animals in Boston!

In his welcome to the students and parents, Dr. Sibler said: “By avoiding a rural campus, you don’t have to worry about your children being bitten by a rabid raccoon, for example.” Not true! There has been a rabid raccoon in the city this summer (as well as skunks and bats), so watch out for these animals! If you see a racoon during the day, something is up since they are nocturnal animals. You should immediately contact Boston’s Animal Control Department at 617-635-5349 to have the animal picked up and report any animal bites to the Boston Public Health Commission at 617-534-5611.

There was a positive raccoon (received on August 15, 2003), although the victim was in Quincy. I believe it was reported to us by the New England Wildlife Center.
