Union appoints new VP of Academic Affairs, plans ice cream social

Student Union senators nearly unanimously approved President Carl Woog’s nomination to appoint Sen. Rebecca Shultz (School of Management) to the recently vacated vice president of Academic Affairs position during Monday’s weekly meeting.

Schultz, the former Senate Academics Affairs Committee chair, resigned from her position as senator to fill the position left vacant following Dave Bresler’s promotion to Executive VP on Nov. 3.

Woog and Bresler had originally said filling the position would take two weeks, but after the Senate meeting, Woog said Schultz was the ‘prime candidate.’

‘Rebecca was at the top of the list from the start,’ he said.

Schultz was the only applicant for the position, and no senators opposed her appointment although three abstained.

Senators also voted unanimously to allocate $120 from their external account to the Public Relations Committee to fund an ice cream social on Nov. 19. Sen. Josh Wilson (West Campus) said the event will help increase student awareness about Union activities.

Although the Senate does not currently control the external account, Senate Chairman Joel Fajardo said he feels Dean of Students Kenneth Elmore, who controls the funds, will permit them to be spent.

‘At this point, all of the funding requests are going through Dean Elmore on a case-by-case basis,’ he said. ‘If he determines that we do not have an official external account, I will request the money through my discretionary account.’

VP of Student Affairs Erik Dawson announced an upcoming airport shuttle service for students over Thanksgiving. Terrier Tracks will run on Nov. 25 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., with buses departing from Warren Towers and West Campus each hour. At 11 a.m. and 6 p.m., the service will only use one bus, picking up students at both West and Warren.

Tickets for the 54 seats on each bus will be sold at various locations for $5 through Nov. 25, and Dawson advised students to buy tickets as soon as possible.

‘I think there’s a very good chance that all the tickets will be sold pre-sale,’ he said.

VP of Residence Life Mike Myers announced details of a ‘Safety Walk’ scheduled for Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. Director of Judicial Affairs Daryl Deluca, Elmore and a Boston University Police Department representative will walk across campus with students, beginning at 1019 Commonwealth Ave. to find areas that appear unsafe. Resident assistants and other representatives will also attend the walk.

Myers said the main focus for this year’s walk is South Campus, specifically the intersection between Park Drive and Buswell Street and the back alleys in that area.

Next week’s meeting will be held on Tuesday instead of Monday due to the university holiday on Nov. 17. Elections for Senate Vice Chair will also take place Nov. 18.

Former Vice Chair Rowan Armor resigned on Nov. 3 after a motion to remove Woog from office failed to pass the Senate.

Sen. Randy Diamond (West Campus) accepted a nomination from Schultz to run for vice chair, but Sen. Meredith Classen (School of Education) turned down a nomination from Sen. Marietta McEvilly (University Professors Program).

If no other nominations are made before Tuesday’s elections, the Senate must approve Diamond by a two-thirds majority vote and if elected vice chair, he will have to resign his position as senator. If he is not approved, the position will remain vacant.

VP of Finance Joe Rollin, who led efforts to create a new website, was not at the meeting but said technical issues had delayed the site’s launch. The website was originally scheduled to be running by Oct. 27.

Sen. Marc Weber (Shelton Hall) guaranteed the website would be up ‘no later than Friday.’
