DEC. 30: Red-hot men’s hoopsters pull huge upset at Michigan

With the new year quickly approaching, the Boston University men’s and women’s basketball teams will be sad to see December go.

With its 61-60 upset victory over the University of Michigan on Dec. 30 in Ann Arbor, the men’s squad (6-3) posted its sixth straight win dating back to Dec. 1.

The Terriers shocked the high-flying Wolverines (8-2) in front of 10,419 at Michigan’s Crisler Arena as senior forward Ryan Butt scored 14 points and junior guard Chaz Carr added 13 to lead BU to one of the biggest wins in program history.

“Since I’ve been the coach at BU, this is the most significant win for our program,” BU coach Dennis Wolff said, according to the Terrier athletics website. “To be able to come in and beat a good Big Ten team on its home court is a great thing for our kids.”

Beside their win over the Wolverines, the Terriers have reeled off wins over Cleveland State University (64-62 on Dec. 22) and Fordham University (60-52 on Dec. 28) since students left for winter break Dec. 20.

After dropping its first three games of the season, the women’s team (4-4) has roared through December with wins in four of its last five games, the latest coming in the form of a 69-68 victory over Wagner University on Dec. 30.

The Terriers toppled Fairleigh Dickinson University in a 78-64 win on Dec. 28 behind 17 points from freshman guard Nadia Bibbs before junior forward Adrienne Norris took the reigns against the Wagner Seahawks with a career-high 22 points Tuesday to help BU improve to .500 on the year.

The men’s team begins conference play on Jan. 2 when the University of New Hampshire comes to town while the women’s squad is set to host Marist College on Jan. 3 and America East foe University of Hartford on Jan 7.

The hockey team will attempt to keep the Terrier unbeaten streak in tact on Jan. 2 and 3 in Minneapolis for two games against red-hot, two-time defending national champion University of Minnesota which has won eight of its last nine after a dismal start.

The tough trip to raucous Mariucci Arena marks the start of a brutal do-or-die January for the Icedogs, in which seven of nine games are against ranked opponents.
