Roy misquoted in article

I am writing in reference to the article entitled “Roy tells PT students to excel in field,” which was published in your March 2, 2004 issue (pg. 3). As a member of the audience and an occupational therapy student at Sargent College, there were some inaccuracies that should be corrected.

Your article made reference only to the physical therapy majors at Sargent College and in the audience, but there were students and faculty from a number of other Sargent College programs in attendance, including occupational therapy, communications disorders, rehabilitation counseling, human physiology, nutrition and athletic training.

In addition, Travis spoke specifically of the importance of occupational therapy as well as physical therapy. But it is stated that he “encouraged physical therapy students to work hard and strive to become the best in their profession” and that he said, “physical therapists can make a significant difference in the lives of patients,” whereas what Travis actually said was that “therapists can make a …” – he did not single out any one profession at any time. He also spoke of his occupational therapist, but that was not mentioned in the article. As Sargent College has students from all areas of rehabilitation sciences and allied health, it is important that this diversity be reflected in the content of The Daily Free Press.

There was another significant misrepresentation in the article. It was stated that the “Boston University Occupational Therapy Student Association” and the Sargent College Honor Society presented Roy with a $1,000 check. The check came solely from the Boston University Student Occupational Therapy Association. In addition to this, the name of our association was printed incorrectly.
