Road treats tennis teams differently

A weekend trip to Burlington, Vt. proved productive for the Boston University men’s tennis team as it captured two wins – a 5-2 America East victory on Friday over the University of Vermont and a 4-3 nail-biter Saturday against the University of Montreal.

But the women’s team, also away this weekend in Hanover, N.H., did not fare as well, dropping a tough 4-3 decision to Dartmouth College.

The men fought like cats and dogs, but in the end, it was the Terriers (4-6) who came out on top to earn the decisive 5-2 victory over the Catamounts (10-11) on the men’s side. BU got ahead early with an 8-5 win at first doubles by senior duo Geoff Wagner and Adam Siegel, while a win at number three doubles by Karim Zahram and Nick Ganias secured the overall doubles point for BU.

The initial advantage was all the Terriers seemed to need as they followed their doubles success by proceeding to win four consecutive singles matches. At No. 1 singles, Wagner secured his second win of the day by beating out his opponent 7-5, 6-3. Freshman roommates Barret Wolf and Mike Orden proved themselves a force to be reckoned with as they earned wins at second and third singles, respectively, as Siegel racked up his second win of the day, a 6-3, 6-1 decision at fourth singles.

BU coach Jeremy Taylor was pleased with his team’s effort as the Terriers secured their second straight victory.

“My guys played really, really well,” Taylor said.

The Terriers managed to make it three straight wins the next day against Montreal, as BU continued the winning trend it started last weekend with a 5-1 trouncing of the University of Rhode Island on March 27.

“The University of Montreal is definitely a better team, and we lost to them last year, so this was good,” Taylor said.

The men’s team is scheduled to play a crucial conference match against the University of New Hampshire on Wednesday at the BU Track and Tennis Center, as the squad tries to gain a better seed for the American East Championships on April 30.

Taylor and his Terriers have their eyes on another prize, however, as Boston College awaits them for a April 21 matchup.

“We would love to take them out,” Taylor said of BC. “I think we have a great opportunity to do that.”

Despite a late charge in singles play, the women’s squad (10-6) couldn’t bounce back from its early losses in doubles play as Dartmouth (11-3) held on to edge out BU.

While the Big Green swept through the doubles competition, the singles scene was as close as it gets with BU and Dartmouth splitting the six matches.

At No. 1 singles, senior captain Lindsey Dynof’s loss to Dartmouth’s Jayme Ahmed marked the first time in four meetings that Ahmed came out on top. BU’s first win on the day came at second singles from Elena deMendoza, as she prevailed 6-3, 2-6, 6-1.

A loss at number three singles ended the 10-match win streak of Erin Katims, as she fell in fighting fashion 6-7, 6-3, 6-2. Another loss followed in the fourth spot as Elisa Glas went down 6-3, 6-7, 6-3. Last-minute victories came for the Terriers at fifth and sixth singles, with Laura Ahmes winning 6-3, 6-4 in the fifth spot and Aimee Charest taking a 7-6, 4-6, 6-3 decision in the final singles position.

The Terrier women are set to do battle with the University of Massachusetts at Amherst at the BU Track and Tennis center on Thursday.
