Students Show Little Respect for Efforts of B ‘ G and Dining Hall Workers

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I am sick of seeing weekly inserts in the Daily Free Press strewn about the staircases in CAS and all over dorm lobbies. This may seem like a trivial issue to bring up with all of the debating going on over Gay Rights and ASL , but it bothers me to see how many self-indulgent BU students litter the halls of the facilities that they should respect. In every location where you can pick up the DFP on campus, there is a trash barrel or recycling bin within 10 feet. Are BU students that lazy? or just plain ignorant? I’m sure that many of you are used to having your fancy maids in your Long Island and New Jersey homes pick up after you, but seriously, show some pride in your school and some respect for the B ‘ G people. The Buildings and Grounds workers are not here to solely clean up your mess, which can easily be prevented. Get off your high horse and show some respect for the people that keep this campus in great shape, day in and day out. This ignorance and “the world revolves around me” mentality is not only visible in the way that students thoughtlessly litter their own campus, but in the way they treat workers in the dining halls. I can’t even count the number of times that I have seen students act rudely toward dining hall workers (not because I am a CGS student, but because I see this behavior far too often). Just because mommy and daddy have loads of money doesn’t mean you can cop an attitude when someone makes a mistake making your sandwich or doesn’t move fast enough for your liking. The dining hall crews at BU work hard, and deserve respect for the work they do. If they seem unpleasant, try saying “Hi” or sparking a small conversation. At the very least say, “Thank you.” They will probably appreciate it, and might even give you a smile (it works for me). B ‘ G and dining hall workers are not our personal servants, and BU students should stop treating them as such. Clean up after yourselves and stop being so ignorant.
