BU Catholic Center hosts its annual Easter ‘linner’

Catholic Boston University students gathered for “linner” – a combination of lunch and dinner – Sunday night in an annual event hosted by the Newman House, Boston University’s Catholic Center.

After two weeks of planning and a whole night of cooking, 40 students gathered for the three-hour Easter “linner” on Bay State Road. The main purpose of the meal was to “provide the same thing you have at home, here, with our family of Christian brothers and sisters,” Event Organizer and College of Engineering senior Clinton Reed said.

The event, open to members of all denominations, provided students with turkey, casserole, salad and a family environment.

The previous night, a group of students gathered to prepare the meal for Easter Sunday, Reed said. Some students, including College of Engineering freshman Jason Nami, cooked until 5 a.m.

“It felt like home,” Nami said, adding that the Catholic Center is “home away from home” on Easter.

Pastoral Council member Katy Thomas, a College of Communication sophomore, said the Boston University tradition began a few years ago and several alumni encouraged Reed to continue it.

“We are a family,” she said, adding that she did not go home for Easter because she “was looking forward to celebrate with [her] spiritual family here.”

Catholic Center Nun Olga Yaqob said for students who are away from home, “it is important to find a place to be as home, as family.”
