April 30: Genome scientist to speak at Commencement

Craig Venter, a scientist who has worked on the human genome project, will address the Class of 2004 and their guests at Commencement on May 16.

Boston University President Aram Chobanian’s announcement of the speaker and honorary degree recipients at Senior Breakfast this morning came between two songs he composed and belted out – “Not Golden nor Silver” and “Poppity-Poppity-Pop.”

“Dr. Venter is one of the most remarkable scientists in the world at the present time,” Chobanian said.

At graduation, BU will give honorary degrees to New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick, Nobel laureate and BU professor emeritus Saul Bellow, BU alumnus and Hillel House donor Irwin Chafetz, Boston Pops conductor Keith Lockhart, state Rep. Edward J. Markey and Emmy Award-winning actress and BU alumna Alfre Woodard.

Albanian Archbishop His Beatitude Anastasios will also receive an honorary degree and be the baccalaureate speaker.
